About the role:
The Senior Technical Officer plays a key role in supporting high‑quality practical and field‑based teaching and research across the school. You will manage laboratories and research facilities, coordinate equipment, consumables and logistics, and maintain accurate operational procedures. The role provides specialist technical expertise to staff and students, including equipment operation, repair, and ensuring safe practices in both laboratory and field environments. While the position is primarily aligned to Botanical science, you will also contribute technical support across other disciplines as required.
As a Senior Technical Officer, Botany, you will:
- Provide day-to-day management of laboratories and teaching spaces.
- Provide specialist knowledge and training to support teaching activities by helping staff and students use discipline‑specific equipment, software and laboratory materials, including during coursework, HDR and final‑year project activities.
- Support the development and delivery of botanical project work and practicals to provide innovative, engaging and safe student experience.
- Manage and support the teaching and learning and research facilities of botanical programs, including logistics and organisation of field-based activities.
- Prepare equipment and ensure all procedures and practices are up-to-date primarily in the botanical area.
To be successful, you’ll have:
- A Bachelor degree in Science with a major botany with subsequent relevant experience; or
- Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical fields; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience working in a related field or discipline in higher education or a similar large complex environment.
- Good knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety principles and an understanding of the requirements for safety when working in the field and with biological and chemical hazards
- Hold a valid Victorian drivers license
- Hold or be willing to achieve Remote First Aid
- Obtain a light/medium rigid license
- Preferable: 4WD experience and knowledge
- Preferable: Animal handling experience
